It was a stark contrast to last year's weather with this year's finals night being played under sweeping rain. Neil Rigden playing one of his favourite green's struggled to get to grips with the conditions in his last 8 match against Brian Fairclough but eventually won 21-19. In his semi-final match he easily accounted for John Ashcroft 21-8 & now was living up to his favourite tag. In the other semi-final, Bill Roddan was too good for Frank Johnson & won 21-11. In the final, Bill lead out on a short mark & went 3-0, then 5-2 up & was lying another two before Neil struck them out. Bill then played two short woods when leading 6-4, allowing Neil to level at 6-6. A corner to corner mark was now the tactics employed by Neil & in no time at all he led 16-6, Bill then managed to score another 2 before Neil ran out to win 21-8 & deservedly take the Steve Rimmer Memorial Singles Shield title for the 1st time & this added to his President's Day success earlier in the season. The League & competitors would like to give many thanks to David Hughes for running this competition in the absence of the secretary, Keith Robinson, who had been away on holiday & for presenting the trophy & prizemoney, Tarleton Bowling Club for the use of their facilities & the league members who helped in the running of this competition, to all measurers, markers, players & spectators supporting this competition, making it a very memorable & fitting tribute to Steve Rimmer.
