In front of a good & appreciative crowd on a seasonal warm autumn evening on the superb Mawdesley BC green, Miles Forshaw (Burscough RBL) deservedly won the Steve Rimmer Memorial Singles Shield title. However, he was luckly to survive his last eight match against the under-18 merit champion, Matty Greenwood (Holmeswood), after trailing 14-19 before he fought back to win 21-20 after Matty had sent off the jack at this crucial point. Though Matty must have been kicking himself at the last end, when he failed to get his last wood within two foot of the jack to take the game. After this wake up call, Miles raised his game & started playing exceptional well on his favourite three-quarter corner mark to easily account for his team-mate, John Mills (Burscough RBL) 21-11 in the semi-final & John Hughes (Botanic Gardens) 21-8 in the final after trailing 0-4 in the early stages of this game. Earlier in the evening, John Hughes was in brillant form to account for John Ashcroft (Crossens) 21-3 in the last 8 & Tony Wakefield (Zetland) 21-11 in the semi-final but unfortunately he was unable to recreate this form in the final. The League & competitors would like to give many thanks to David Taylor (League President) for presenting the trophy & prizemoney, Mawdesley Bowling Club for the use of their facilities & their members who helped in the running of this competition, as well as to the league members who supported this competition, making it a very memorable & fitting tribute to Steve Rimmer.
