In front of a disappointing small crowd, Roy Webster (Banks St Stephens), battling both his opponents & the atrocious weather, took the Steve Rimmer Memorial Shield singles title in a nail-biting & highly competitive final. He was in excellent form throughout the evening playing the full corners on the heavy but playable green which all his opponents struggled to match. In the last 8, he had a comfortable win of 21-03 & then in the semi-final he eased past Carl Hankin (London Hotel) 21-11, who earlier produced the shock of the evening beating Mike Tunstall (Burscough RBL). In the other half of the draw, Miles Forshaw (Burscough RBL) was in equally impressive form with wins of 21-12 & 21-17 to reach the final. In the final, Miles playing his favourite three quarter diagonal marks was in command in the early stages & after 22 ends led 17-11. However, determined Roy then managed for the first time to get onto his favourite corner mark & had a run of 9 unanswered points to take a 20-17 lead. Leading for game, Roy played a yard & a half short wood which allowed Miles back in the game & he took full advantage to take the end & win the next end with a two to tie the game at 20 across. In the final end, Miles led towards the clubhouse across the middle of the green but his first wood was slightly tight & went two foot past the block, Roy stepped in by playing his wood on a better line but still went a foot & a half past the block. Miles' final wood was on the same land as Roy's first wood but just trickled past the counting wood to give Roy the game & the title. The Final was a fitting finale to this year's competition & credit must be given to both players for their excellent bowling in atrocious conditions. The League & competitors would like to give many thanks to Stephen Ball (President) for presenting the trophy & prizemoney in the absence of Yvonne Rimmer, Holmeswood Bowling Club for the use of their facilities & their members who helped in the running of this competition, as well as to the many league members who supported this competition, making it a very memorable & fitting tribute to Steve Rimmer, who would have been pleased to see a Banks St Stephens clubmate winning his competition for the second year running.
