Luckily the weather just held for the duration of finals night & in front of a medium size crowd of around 40 spectators, the favourite Emlyn Weekes (Banks St Stephens) took the Steve Rimmer Memorial Shield singles title in comfortable style. He was in excellent form throughout the evening using various lengths & marks all around the superb running green. In the last 8, he had a comfortable win of 21-09 & then in the semi-final he had his toughest game against club-mate, Lennie Southworth, which he won 21-16 in impressive form winning 12 of the last 16 ends after trailing 8-12 in the early stages. In the other half of the draw, Colin Moore (London Hotel) of the host club commenced the evening with a 21-14 win against his team-mate, John Coulton. In his semi-final, he had a tremendous battle against Bill Hefferan (Banks St Stephens), which he finally edged 21-18, after a superb comeback from Bill who fought back to 18-19, after trailing 10-18 before a relieved Colin scored two at the last end to take the game. In the final, Emlyn was in determined as well as exceptional form & quickly established a 16-5 lead after only 12 ends. Seven ends later, he had won the game 21-9 & taken the title for the first time. The League & competitors would like to give many thanks to Eddie Harding (President) for presenting the trophy & prizemoney in the absence of Yvonne Rimmer, who is currently convalescing after a shoulder operation, London Hotel Bowling Club for the use of their excellent facilities including the superb condition of their green & their members who helped in the running of this competition, as well as to the many league members who supported this competition, making it a very memorable & fitting tribute to Steve Rimmer, who would have been pleased to see a Banks St Stephens clubmate winning his competition for the first time.
