BURSCOUGH & LATHOM MENS BOWLING LEAGUE
Review of the 2009 season
Despite the lacklustre weather again this summer, the league had once again a very full & successful season, which was slightly overshadowed by the few key occasions when teams were unable to raise teams.
Despite losing their first three games of the season & being in 9th position in the division, Mere Brow A won their next 15 matches to win the 1st Division Championship for the 23rd time & by a comfortable 22 points. Whilst Banks St. Stephens B finished as runners-up for the first time in their history but had only 9 points to spare over the 3rd placed team, Burscough RBL A. At the other end of the table, Longton VM A & Tarleton A were relegated to the 2nd Division. The 1st Division Player of the Year award was won for the 1st time by Carl Birchall (Mere Brow A), who scored a record points total of 43 points winning 17 of 18 games, despite losing his opening game.
In the 2nd division, after a season long battle with London Hotel & Zetland A, Banks St Stephens A finally secured the championship on the last day of the season pipping their rivals by just 1 point, winning 15 of their 18 matches to gain promotion straight back into the 1st Division after being relegated last season. This is the 2nd time they have won this title, the other occasion was in 1983. London Hotel finished runners-up to secure the second promotion place with an identical match record as Banks Stephens A but had one fewer individual winner over the course of the entire season. London Hotel gained promotion into the 1st division for their 1st time in their history. At the bottom of the table, Longton VM B & Promenade were relegated. The 2nd Division Player of the Year award was won for the first time by John Moore (Tarleton B) by the smallest of margins by scoring 11 more chalks over the season then long-time leader Karl Jackson (Hesketh Bank) who had the same points score. He scored 35 points winning 14 of 18 games. Last season, he won the 3rd Divison title making an unique double, which as never been achieved before in the history of the league. In the 3rd division, league newcomers, Zetland B, won the championship by 13 points, winning 12 out of their 16 matches & gaining promotion to the 2nd division. Botanic Gardens B had just a 6 point margin over their nearest rivals, Burscough RBL B, to finish as runners-up for the 2nd time in their history, the other occasion was in 2005. Their promotion to the 2nd Division was only secured on the final day of the season with a superb 8-2 away win after a season long battle with Burscough RBL B & Hoole Village Hall. The 3rd Division Player of the Year award was won by league newcomer, Dave Tomlinson Senior (Zetland B), who scored 37 points winning 15 of his 16 games. On a fine night & in front of a medium sized crowd, Mere Brow A made it a 1st Division Championship & KO Team Trophy double with a convincing 53.5 chalk victory over, 3rd Division Champions, Zetland B, in the final on the superb London Hotel Green, which was a credit to the greenkeeper, Mr. Colin Moore. Despite having to give a 40.5 start to Zetland B, Mere Brow A were never troubled once their first four players had all won & wiped out the handicap taking a 12.5 chalk lead, led by man of the match, Danny Finch's superb 21-2 victory & accompanied with wins of 21-5, 21-7 & 21-17. The second four games were more closely contested, though Mere Brow A still won three out of the four with wins of 21-11, 21-15 & 21-20. Zetland B's sole winner was Norman Hadfield who played superbly from 3-10 down to win the next 13 out of 15 ends to take the game 21-13. The final two players for Mere Brow A shown no mercy both winning 21-5 to take the title, which they last won in 2006. League Newcomers, Zetland B, had done superbly to reach the final & to win the 3rd Division Championship in their first year. Semi-finalists were Banks St Stephens A & Mere Brow B. On Friday 31st July, the weather just held for the duration of finals night & in front of a medium size crowd of around 40 spectators, the favourite Emlyn Weekes (Banks St Stephens) took the Steve Rimmer Memorial Shield singles title in comfortable style. He was in excellent form throughout the evening using various lengths & marks all around the superb running green. In the last 8, he had a comfortable win of 21-09 & then in the semi-final he had his toughest game against club-mate, Lennie Southworth, which he won 21-16 in impressive form winning 12 of the last 16 ends after trailing 8-12 in the early stages. In the other half of the draw, Colin Moore (London Hotel) of the host club commenced the evening with a 21-14 win against his team-mate, John Coulton. In his semi-final, he had a tremendous battle against Bill Hefferan (Banks St Stephens), which he finally edged 21-18, after a superb comeback from Bill who fought back to 18-19, after trailing 10-18 before a relieved Colin scored two at the last end to take the game. In the final, Emlyn was in determined as well as exceptional form & quickly established a 16-5 lead after only 12 ends. Seven ends later, he had won the game 21-9 & taken the title for the first time. The League & competitors would like to give many thanks to Eddie Harding (President) for presenting the trophy & prizemoney in the absence of Yvonne Rimmer, who was convalescing after a shoulder operation, London Hotel Bowling Club for the use of their excellent facilities including the superb condition of their green & their members who helped in the running of this competition, as well as to the many league members who supported this competition, making it a very memorable & fitting tribute to Steve Rimmer, who would have been pleased to see a Banks St Stephens clubmate winning his competition for the first time. The following day, Adrian Ditchfield (Croston Black Horse), & a guest of the President, won his second President's Day title in four years by beating Tommy Draper (Promenade) 21-12 in a one-sided final. He totally dominated the final with some excellent lead bowling & took a 10-1 early advantage after only 7 ends, which he extended to 18-9 after 17 ends & took the game & title 21-12 after 23 ends. Even though he won his early round matches convincingly 15-10 & 21-4, he was tested to the wire in his quarter-final game with Dave Pennington (Zetland) who at one stage led 18-14. But using his favourite mark along the edge of the green, Adrian made a great comeback to seal the victory 21-19 including playing four superb last ends, even though he sent the block off the green on the final end. After this tussle, Adrian beat George Bradley (Promenade) 21-10 in the semi-final. In the other half of the draw, Tommy Draper (Promenade) was playing consistently well & using his green knowledge to cruise to the semi-final with wins of 15-8, 21-11 & 21-11. In the semi-final, he just got the better of Kevin Leddy (Hesketh Arms) 21-15. 33 competitors took part in this excellent event hosted by the League President, Mr. Eddie Harding (London Hotel). They were rewarded with a
thoroughly enjoyable day, which included a superb buffet. Play throughout the day
was of the highest standard on the superb green. After the final, the league president, Mr. Eddie Harding, presented the prizes to the winners & thanked
his club members for their help, Keith Robinson, league secretary, for running
another excellent event as well as to all the competitors who had taken part in the
event. He finished by saying that he had fully enjoyed his day. On Sunday 9th August, it was third time lucky for Mark Chester of Fox Lane BC who finally won the Under-18 merit title, after being the runner-up for the last two years.
Mark beat Steve Edwards (New Longton) 15-7 in a one sided final using his favourite off the crown swinging mark to great effect, which Steve had no answer to despite his best efforts.
In the semi-finals, Steve beat Eddie Rimmer (Zetland) 15-12 & Mark beat David Gibbons (Scarisbrick BC) 15-7. In the early round-robin group stages, David
in Group A was undefeated with wins of 15-4, 15-10, 15-8 & 15-3, whilst Mark
won Group B with wins of 15-12, 15-2 & 15-3, Steve won Group C with wins of
15-7, 15-4 & 15-3. The semi-finals were made up by Eddie who was the best
runner-up, whose only defeat was against Mark Chester in a tough match which
Mark eventually won 15-12. It was good to see a creditable attendance of 13
competitors, many of whom had not played in the competition before & their
ages ranged from 8 to 17. It was good to see them enjoying every minute of the afternoon &
produced some top quality play for the assembled crowd to enjoy on the superb
London Hotel Green on a beautiful hot afternoon. During the presentation, the league
president, Mr. Eddie Harding of London Hotel BC,
presented the trophies, prizemoney & certificates to all successful
competitors. The secretary, Mr Keith Robinson, thanked London Hotel
BC for the use of their facilities, as well as volunteers,
Roy Wignall & Alan Wright for their help in the successful running of
the event. He also thanked the competitors for their good sportsmanship
throughout the competition & hoped to see most of them at next year’s
event. Despite the poor weather & in front of a small crowd, Mick Lynch & Eric Whitehead (Tarleton) were worthy winners of the League Pairs competition. In the final, from five across after eight ends, they allowed their opponents, Jimmy Anderton & Philip Rigby (Mere Brow), who were unable to produce their earlier form, only four more singles, as they romped to victory 21-09 with consistent leading from Mick Lynch & good backup play from Eric Whitehead. In the semi-finals, Mick & Eric easily accounted for Dave Bridge & Peter Hodge (Mere Brow & Tarleton), who had reached the semi-final for the second year running, 21-14. Whilst Jimmy & Philip had a tough match against Denis Hunter & Barry Riding (Croston Subscription) which they just won 21-18. In the quarter-finals, Mick & Eric had their toughest game of the night against John Berry & John Cragg (Mere Brow) which they finally won 21-17 after leading 18-12. Whilst Dave & Peter easily accounted for Richard Jenkins & Keith Robinson (Banks St Stephens), 21-13, who could not produce their form of previous rounds which had see them beat last year's winners, Carl Birchall & Ian Grady. In the first quarter-final, Denis & Barry, had easily beaten homesters, Keith (Sid) Stafford & Peter Wilson (London Hotel), who never recovered from a shaky start, 21-08. Whilst Jimmy & Philip had beaten youngsters Steve Edwards Junior & Owen Jackson (New Longton) 21-15 after leading 18-10. The President, Mr. Eddie Harding (London Hotel), made the presentation to the worthy victors & prizewinners. The League & competitors would like to give many thanks to the President & London Hotel Bowling Club for the use of their excellent facilities including the superb condition of their green & to all league members who helped in the running of this competition, making it a very memorable & successful event. Congratulations to the following league members who had success in national & open competitions: Carl Birchall (Mere Brow) who won the Huntapac Open Singles at Mere Brow as well as winning the Botanic Gardens Floodlit pairs with teammate Ian Grady, Wayne Ditchfield (Banks St Stephens B) who won a record 4th BCGBA All-England Junior Merit title by beating Mark Chester (Fox Lane), the current holder of our under-18 merit title, 21-18 in a fine final at the Canberra Club, Samlesbury.
