In an all third division final, last year's runner-up, Tommy Draper (Promenade) went one better to take his first President's day title with a 21-09 win over Kevin Leddy (Hesketh Arms) in a one-sided final. He played the corners and a mark across the middle of the green consistently well throughtout the day with easy wins of 21-08 & 21-07 in the early rounds. His only close game of the day was in the last 8 when he was well down to Denis Hunter (Croston Subscription) which he just managed to win 21-18 after a determined fightback. He then had a easy 21-07 semi-final win over John Stennett (Botanic Gardens) to reach his second consecutive final. In the other half of the draw, Kevin Leddy (Hesketh Arms) was also playing consistently well and had wins of 21-17 & 21-13 in the early rounds. He also was several chalks adrift in the last 8 but he used all his skills to eventually get the better of Gary Burgess (Banks St Stephens) 21-20 in a thrilling game. In another tough game, he reached the final with a 21-17 win against Roy Wignall (Botanic Gardens). This set-up a re-match in the final of last year's semi-final encounter but Kevin could not get his revenge over Tommy as he could not match Tommy's superior play over the longer lengths as he seemed to have run out of steam due to the real tough games he had played earlier in the day compared with Tommy's easier route to the final.
32 competitors took part in this excellent event hosted by
the League President, Mr. Stephen Ball (Holmeswood). Despite the inclement weather consisting of humid overcast conditions with a few scattered showers, they were rewarded with a
thoroughly enjoyable day, which included a superb buffet. Play throughout the day
was of the highest standard despite the heavy running green due to the wet weather in the week prior to the event. After the final, the league president, Mr. Stephen Ball, presented the prizes to the winners & thanked the ladies for producing a superb tea,
his club members for all their help & Keith Robinson, league secretary, for running
another excellent event as well as to all the competitors who had taken part in the
event. He finished by saying that he had fully enjoyed his day.
