Following Gary Trewhitt being stuck in a traffic jam on the motorway caused by a lorry pile-up, Stan Jervis was brought in at very short notice to partner Trevor Wilkinson & with Stan leading exceptionally well all evening ably supported by Trevor, they were the surprise but well deserved winners of the League pairs competition. Though in the semi-finals, they looked beaten when they trailed the favourites & previous winners, Duncan Crabtree & Peter Iddon, 15-20 after 24 ends. Before, they got a double in the 25th end & then they ran out getting a single in each of the next 4 ends with Stan leading exceptionally well on his favourite corner to corner mark. In the other semi-final, Jimmy Alty & Colin Coffey just got the better of John Ashcroft & Mike Dunlop 21-17 when they scored 4 chalks over the last 2 ends to turn the game in their favour when it was tied at 17 across after 22 ends. In a extremely competitive final, which was a fitting conclusion to the competition, though at one stage it looked like being a one-sided affair, when Stan & Trevor led 10-0 after the first 4 ends but Jimmy & Colin battled back & in fact led 16-15, before Stan & Trevor took control of the game once again by running out scoring 6 chalks over the last 3 ends using their favourite corner to corner mark to win the game 21-16 & to take this coveted pairs title for the first time. Keith Robinson (Secretary) congratulated the winners and runners-up as well as all the prizewinners before presenting the trophy & prize money. He then went on to thank Tarleton Bowling Club & their members for all their help in hosting the night & for the use of their excellent facilities including their green which was in superb condition as well as the measurers & spectators who had come down to watch despite the weather. He also thanked the organizers & green keepers at all the qualifying venues for all their help & to the competitors for their excellent play & sportsmanship throughout the event.
