On a bitterly cold night, John Hughes & Fergal Wright (Botanic Gardens), playing exceptionally well all evening on their favourite full corner to corner mark, were the well deserved winners of the end of season League pairs competition. They never looked back after edging out homsters & favourites, Peter Iddon & Duncan Crabtree (Longton VM), 21-19 after a epic battle which lasted a hour & a half in the last 8. In the semi-finals, after winning the toss, they had a 18 break in the corners before their opponents, Brian Coleman & Trevor Wilkinson (Zetland), got hold of the block. Brian & Trevor then staged a mini revival winning five of the next six ends before John & Fergal closed out the match 21-6. In the other semi-final, homsters, Tim Slinger & Nico Susnik, easily accounted for John Ashcroft & Keith Jones (Crossens) 21-8 playing short marks to the crown & back. Earlier, John & Keith had accounted for Darren Evans & Carl Gregson (Burscough RBL) 21-16 after trailing 8-15 they staged a remarkable comeback winning six of the last seven ends. The final was expected to be a contest in differing styles, with John & Fergal prefering corner to corner marks while Tim & Nico were playing marks just over a length. After winning the toss, John who had led brilliantly on his favouite corner to corner mark ably supported by teenager, Fergal, won the first three ends to lead 9-0. Despite winning four of the next seven ends, Tim & Nico, were unable to match the superb play of John & Fergal in the corners, which resulted in a comfortable 21-5 win for John & Fergal to take this coveted title for the first time. Keith Robinson (Secretary) thanked Longton VM Bowling Club & their members for all their help in hosting the night at such short notice & for the use of the excellent facilities including their green which was superb condition. He then presented the trophy & prize money to all the final night competitors.
