On a extremely mild night for the end of October, Chris & Mark Thompson, playing exceptionally well all evening, were the surprise but well deserved winners of the end of season League pairs competition & in doing so became the first Father & Son partnership to achieve this feat. In the semi-finals, they took on last year's runners-up, homesters & favourites, Miles Forshaw & John Mills but in a one-sided affair, they won 21-8 with Mark leading consistently well on his favourite diagonal mark, from the entrance just over the ridge which runs parallel with the railway line about 7 foot from the edge of the green & back again, ably assisted by his father, Chris. In the other semi-final, last year's winners, Duncan Crabtree & Peter Iddon easily accounted for the other homesters left in the competition, Keith Cheetham & Rob Lock 21-13. In a fitting finale to the season, the final was a nip & tuck affair until end 18 when Mark & Chris led 13-12. In the next four ends, playing their favourite mark once again, they scored the eight chalks necessary to run out 21-12 winners & to take the coveted pairs title for the first time. Dave Haskayne (President) congratulated the winners and runners-up as well as all the prizewinners before presenting the trophy & prize money as well as a special gift to the League secretary, Keith Robinson, as appreciation of all his hard work throughout the season. The League secretary, Keith Robinson, thanked Burscough RBL Bowling Club & their members for all their help in hosting the night & for the use of the excellent facilities including their green which was still in superb condition despite the time of year. He also thanked the organizers & green keepers at all the qualifying venues for all their help & to the competitors for their excellent play & sportsmanship throughout the event.
