On a windy autumn night, Duncan Crabtree & Peter Iddon, of the host club, went one better than last year, by being well deserved winners of the end of season League pairs competition & in doing so achieving a remarkable treble of winning all of the league's non-team events between them in a season, with Peter winning the League's President Day & Duncan winning the Steve Rimmer Memorial Singles as well as the Pairs competition. A feat that had never been done before in the history of the league . During the early rounds of the finals night, on the superb Longton VM No.1 green, they were never troubled with Peter leading consistently well on his favourite edge of the green mark with Duncan playing exceptional bowls at the back which resulted in their opponents being unable to compete with them. In the quarter-finals they beat the Mere Brow pairing of Dave Bridge & Derek Rotherham 21-15 while in the semi-finals they beat the Croston Black Horse pairing of Philip Edmundson & Alec Everton 21-14. In the other half of the draw, Miles Forshaw & John Mills (Burscough RBL) easily accounted for last year's winner, Bill Roddan & , his new partner, Dave Pennington (Zetland & Botanic Gardens) 21-9 in the quarter-final & John Hughes & John Roberts (Botanic Gardens) 21-10 in the semi-finals. In the early stages of the final, which was a fitting climax to the competition & season, Duncan & Peter led 11-5 after eight ends. The next two ends were won by their opponents to reduce their deficit to 8-11. Three ends later using their favourite mark, Peter & Duncan had scored three twos to lead 17-8. Their opponents then fought back with a four at the next end to make the score 12-17. Four ends later, Peter & Duncan lay game at 19-14 for what looked like a comfortable win, however, John Mills had other ideas & with his last bowl of the end ran the block to their back woods to make four & to put them back in the game at 18-19. They shared the next two ends in the corners, then Miles led to the crown in the middle of the green but Peter & Duncan were the ones who clinced the final chalk they needed with a 2 foot wood to win the thrilling final 21-19 & to take the coveted title for the 2nd time, the previous occasion was eleven years ago in 2002. Ady Hoyle (President) congratulated the winners and runners-up as well as all the prizewinners before presenting the trophy & prize money. The League secretary, Keith Robinson, thanked Longton VM Sports & Social Club & their members for all their help in hosting the night & for the use of the excellent facilities including their green which was still in superb condition despite the time of year. He also thanked the organizers & green keepers at all the qualifying venues for all their help & to the competitors for their excellent play & sportsmanship throughout the event.
